Julie Gilhart on Making Sustainability Mainstream

“If we can become more educated, we can educate these people that have a lot of impact on the planet and we can also create models that are economically attractive because nothing's going to happen unless people can make money from it- that's the way this world exists and I don't think there's enough philanthropy in the world to change the world. I think we have to make philanthropy very successful and it has to make people money. That's how the big players are really going to take it on.

"I see designing, running a company, like a high-level athletic activity. I don’t want to hear anything about the fragility or any of those things. If an athlete is too fragile to run, he cannot run. And this is exactly the same. You don’t accept this kind of business if you’re too much of an artist."

"The wider world percieves fashion as a frivolity that should be done away with. The point is that fashion is the armour to survive the reality of everyday life. I don't think that you could do away with it. It would be like doing away with civilization."

Thank You, Robin Givhan

"On the occasion of the Obama administration’s third state dinner...the American first lady wore an Alexander McQueen evening gown that offered rich fodder for examining the complex relationship between the designer fashion industry, the rising prominence of China, and the position that eclectic style can occupy in a world of protocol and tradition.
The red petal print, silk organza gown wasn’t so much an act of diplomacy as a broad statement about the new realities of the fashion industry. In choosing a dress from Alexander McQueen, Mrs. Obama championed the cause of artisan design, the legacy of bespoke tailoring, and the staggering creativity that can be nurtured in the frock trade when it is at its best. The sleeveless dress, with its asymmetrical neckline, was created by a house that represents the designer imagination at its most indulgent and devilish. And in wearing the gown to honor China, a country that many view with disdain for its abundance of cheap labor, counterfeit products, and poor labor practices, Mrs. Obama seemed to be recognizing the country’s inevitable place in the fashion cycle and giving it its due."

First Lady Fashion Statement

“My understanding is that the visit was to promote American-Chinese trade — American products in China and Chinese products in America. Why do you wear European clothes?”

Luxury is Sustainable

“Quality items that stand the test of time – it is this concept of sustainability, symbolised by a timeless handbag that you wear again and again, and can pass on, that I am always thinking of when I design.”

Technology Will Save Us All

"We will all need to overcome our prejudice that natural made fibers are more eco-friendly. Producing organic cotton takes an incredible amount of water to produce, which we now know is not as sustainable as we once thought it was. I believe that man-made fibers are truly the next hot trend in sustainable fashion."

One for the Dreamers

"There were a lot of unimaginative private equity people who said that women would never shop online...I think about those people a lot. I'm sure their wives are having Net-a-porter bags delivered to their homes everyday."

Oscar de la Renta on Sustainable Fashion

“Sustainable fashion implies a commitment to the traditional techniques, and not just the art, of making clothes. I work today in the same way that I first learnt in the ateliers of Balenciaga and Lanvin 50 years ago. We need to ensure that the next generation of seamstresses and tailors have the skills necessary to develop clothes that are not only beautiful but extremely well made.”

The current interest in the environment is a good thing. The best way to make a contribution in fashion is to promote the idea that a fundamental interest in preserving the environment is itself fashionable.”

French Vogue Cover Pokes Fun At Not So Funny Past

"The only reason I got the cover of
French Vogue was because Yves Saint
Laurent
called up and told them
he'd pull his ads if they didn't.
So of course I got the cover."

"...People are aware that the planet is a precious thing, just as luxury should be precious, and the two thoughts should be put together so that everything that we're creating in a truly luxurious world should be things that have roots in sustainability."

Alber Elbaz Speaks at UNESCO

“Do you know anyone who wants to be a seamstress? Do you know anyone who wants to be a tailor? I don’t, either. But I do know many people who want to be models, and not only models, but supermodels. This is the game today: Be famous, and do it really, really fast.”
