Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty Exhibit Art

This is a great video about the Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty exhibit narrated by Andrew Bolton, curator at The Metropolitan Musuem of Art.  In it, he gives a detailed description of each gallery and the key moments in McQueen's career. A chance to see inside the exhibition for those of you that might not have the chance to see it in person.

Making a Statement.

Hello all!

Hope everyone is having a great week so far.

Not sure if it's been apparent or not, but I have a slight obsession with statement jewelry. I love the way a piece of jewelry can tie an entire outfit together.

One of my favorite pieces of jewelry is the cocktail ring (or the dinner ring, statement ring, etc). I think big rings are a great way to make an outfit stand out without being too flashy or obvious.

So, I selected a few of my favorites from my jewelry box to show all of you. I'd love to hear your thoughts!

I apologize for my chipped nails... getting a manicure tomorrow!

What's your favorite statement ring or piece of jewelry?

Shoe Art.

Hello all!

So I'm sure it's already apparent but I have an OBSESSION with shoes. I could literally open up my very own shoe museum. There is just something special about the perfect shoe that ties an entire outfit all together! That's why I cannot wait for spring... so I can throw my boots aside already!

There are certain shoes that I buy for aesthetic reasons... they're just so delicate, different or colorful! I have to admit that they usually stay in my closet because I'm too afraid to ruin them... silly I know!

Here are some fabulous photos I found of "Shoe Art":

We all know these McQueen babies!

You also need to check out the Virtual Shoe Museum and the Bata Shoe Museum... they're fabulous. I've actually been to the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto, Canada and it's awesome!

What do you think of these? For the feet or for the museum? Do you have a favorite pair of shoes you refuse to wear outside and "ruin"?

Thank You, Robin Givhan

"On the occasion of the Obama administration’s third state dinner...the American first lady wore an Alexander McQueen evening gown that offered rich fodder for examining the complex relationship between the designer fashion industry, the rising prominence of China, and the position that eclectic style can occupy in a world of protocol and tradition.
The red petal print, silk organza gown wasn’t so much an act of diplomacy as a broad statement about the new realities of the fashion industry. In choosing a dress from Alexander McQueen, Mrs. Obama championed the cause of artisan design, the legacy of bespoke tailoring, and the staggering creativity that can be nurtured in the frock trade when it is at its best. The sleeveless dress, with its asymmetrical neckline, was created by a house that represents the designer imagination at its most indulgent and devilish. And in wearing the gown to honor China, a country that many view with disdain for its abundance of cheap labor, counterfeit products, and poor labor practices, Mrs. Obama seemed to be recognizing the country’s inevitable place in the fashion cycle and giving it its due."

There Can Be Only One

Still in shock at the news that one of the most gifted and inspiring fashion designers is no longer with us. A memorial has appeared outside the McQueen store in New York, which will remain closed until Saturday.

I would love to write a long lovely post expressing how wonderful and innovative and fantastic and entertaining and artful I found Alexander McQueen to be, but I think his work speaks for itself:

Photos of the Moment | Alexander McQueen

Alexander McQueen’s Primordial Reveries

Fashion is all about renewal, Alexander McQueen reminded us at his fashion show Tuesday night. But it is all about spectacle as well, lest anyone take the collection – with its reptilian encrustations – at face value.

Titled “Plato’s Atlantis”, the performance opened with a video of a naked woman writhing in the sand with snakes. Two robotic arms with video cameras glided up and down the runway, gyrating like snakes, streaming the show live on the designer’s website.

The opening styles were silk dresses with reptilian patterns in shades of green, brown and gold. Large flaps folded over the shoulders and around the hips. Turquoise jewels embroidered on waists and turtlenecks resembled scales. The models’ feet were encased in ankle boots with the most extreme platforms of Paris fashion week. The result didn’t look anything like a shoe.

As the video screen played images of a nude woman floating in water, the show shifted into aquatic looks. Blues and greens replaced the desert tones. A sensible gray dress was cut away across the chest and back to reveal swirls of turquoise.

Gray and black leather dresses looked like rubber – more futuristic than the vintage-looking leather on many other runways during the past week. Models wore masks plastered on to the bridge of their noses and their temples, giving them angular and alien-like profiles. . .

Because Even Alexander McQueen Gets Sick of Fashion

“You know, it’s hard enough doing this job — I don’t have to live it as well. I’d rather sit at home watching ‘Coronation Street.’ ”
