Sail Away With Me

This dress titled "The Stylish Wanderer" on modcloth.com, is a perfect dress for a San Diegan to show her love for the sea. Sailboats filling the pattern of the dress make it nautically nice. Trend staff editor Alice looked so nice in her yellow one!

Vogue Africa

Photographer Mario Epanya's proposal to create a Vogue Africa edition has been officially declined by Condé Nast. Epanya had been campaigning for several months and even created mock-ups of possible magazine covers, but unfortunately it was not enough to convince Condé Nast to open an African outpost.  In response to this, several bloggers have commented that the decision has racist undertones. This seems like a strong accusation considering that Vogue Italia published  The Black Issue in 2008 and has subsequently devoted a section of their site to black stylemakers called Vogue Black.
The decision not to greenlight Vogue Africa might have more to do with the fact that Africa is a continent rife with political strife and low consumer spending power. China, with a population greater than all of Africa, did not launch its own edition of Vogue until 2005. Although it would be wonderful to see a new edition of Vogue that focuses on Africa, we should not assume that Condé Nast is not considering this as a future possibility. Also, unless visits to Vogue Black and similar sites increase, it it is difficult to make a case for the success of a large-scale glossy devoted solely to African fashion. It is definitely time to see more diversity of not just color, but also culture in fashion magazines and as readers and creators of fashion content, we do not have to wait for Vogue Africa in order to make that a reality.

Aow, wouldn't it be loverly?

Hello everyone! I just had to turn your attention to this Forever 21 tee. What is marvelous about Forever 21 is their totally affordable prices. This racer-back is absolutely splendid and costs less than 15 dollars. When San Diego isn't so sunny (which it has unfortunately been off and on cloudy), slip on this tee and dream of overseas Italy.

Day dreaming and cloud watching,

New York City - "IT BAG"

Longchamp est. 1948, a French brand that hasn't seem to have made it's mark in Southern California just yet. The brand first landed in the U.S. in 1999, Madison Avenue NY (of course). In lower Manhattan SoHo lies "La Maison Unique Longchamp", beholding a beautifully designed interior as pictured above. Throughout the streets of NYC, many young ladies trotted around in a Longchamp "Le Pliage". This "IT BAG" seems to be worn mainly by college-aged women. The price, design, and size for these nylon/leather babies are, to my amusement, quite practical. Not only are they spacious and durable, they can also be folded into a compact size with a snap-on when not in use. The designer "Le Pliage" handbags range from $80-$155, no wonder it's flooded in the streets of NYC! "SAN DIEGO, HERE WE COME!"

New York City - Street Fashion

Fashion in New York this summer consists plenty of florals, gladiator sandals, messenger bags, crossover bags, and fedoras. With the blazing east-coast heat, it's no wonder everybody dresses in loose fitted clothing, in hopes of catching a store front or subway breeze! The Big Apple, the city that never sleeps, is on the run 24/7. You'll find New Yorkers scurrying their way around town at all hours, day and night. Unlike Californians and our fast cars, they have fast legs. Many New Yorkers run the town by taking the widely used subway stations, costing $8.25 for a day pass; or, like our Sex and the City fashionista idols, take the taxi. Which is why being equipped with travel friendly outfits is a must! It's not a surprise that many city gals are sporting messenger bags and crossovers for their convenience and style. Gladiator sandals are securely strapped onto your feet, which makes being on-the-go a lot easier. You'll be surprised, every girl in SoHo flaunts a different pair. Gotta LOVE New York City, fashion and function!

XOXO,

Addie <3

Recycled Jewelry by Anita Quansah

London-based Anita Quansah is a textile designer that reworks recycled cloths into beautifully intricate fabrics which are used in haute couture collections, as well as her own clothing designs. She also utilizes this same sense of sustainable creativity when designing necklaces, incorporating found beads, chains and fabrics in innovative ways. In fact, her necklaces are  more like wearable art than jewelry and proof that clever upcycling can yield amazing results.

"Top Model" Searches For Next Star in San Diego

Hundreds of women from San Diego lined up yesterday to audition for America's Next Top Model at NTC Promenade in Point Loma. Casting director commented on San Diego girls: “People who come out of San Diego are free spirits. It’s a more relaxed place, so people are not so stressed out. There is something about the kind of all-American California girl that comes out of San Diego that we enjoy.” If you are interested in applying go online to the CW! And read the whole article from today's Union Tribune: "Top Model Hopefuls Put On Their Best Face."

Bringing Color to Our World

This is a little late to be posting on this, but having had worked at a movie theater, I would like to reccomend this movie :). A Single Man by fashion designer Tom Ford is FABULOUS. College Professor George Falconer (played by Colin Firth) struggles with the loss of his lover throughout the movie. Set in the 60's Tom Ford Captures the true essence of the period. Every detail of this film was pristine. From the earrings to eyeliner to the clothing everything was immaculately chosen. Not to mention the musical score was tearfully moving. This most definitely a must see.

The Skinny on Erin Wasson

Erin Wasson has walked the runway for every major designer. Not only that, she is a part time designer and stylist. For two whole seasons now she has rightly earned the privilege of being the stylist for Vogue's award winning designer Alexander Wang. Wasson has quite a list of achievements. Can anyone say "prolific"? Simply amazing. Her website is definitely something worth looking at.  http://www.erinwasson.com/.

Two left feet

Let's take this time to reflect on things we are thankful for...the food we have, the roof over out head and most importantly having a left and right shoe. Yes ladies, not until the early 1900's were left and right shoes distinguished from each other! So every time you slip on a pair of Toms, Franco Sartos, Steve Madden's or even random flip flops, rejoice in a left and right shoe!
...Ahhh...feels lovely...

United Nude

These exquisite computer designed heels were crafted by United Nude. United Nude shoes have been featured in magazines this year across the world. Officially sold in 35 over countries, United Nude's shoes demand attention. This particular design is part of a project titled "Lo Res" in which the shoes are part of an "automated design revolution."
Futuristic style clothing has been making its way into the fashion world (highly influenced by Lady Gaga) and what futuristic and revolutionary heels these are!

North Park's 106th Ray at Night

Walking through a small gallery in Balboa Park, the artist told me of a fashion show happening at Ray At Night, a monthly art walk in North Park (this one happened to be the 106th). I hadn't been in a few years so I decided to check it out (along with fellow Trend staffer Bridgett who had never been) and got there just in time for the "show." The Cirello Gallery, where the show was held, attracted many with its large fashion photographs and interactive art piece that was projected outside. However, the show did not live up to the appearance of the venue, and consisted of only a few girls walking from the street into the gallery and posing in front of some images. The clothing was not very interesting, though the jewelry was amazing; it was made out of scrap medal and contained detailed designs that swirled around, almost lacy in its execution and pattern.

After the show we ventured down Ray Street, which is lined with other galleries and eclectic shops, including the newly opened Kava Lounge, which was like stepping into a sweet smelling jungle: the ceiling is covered with tree-like branches, incents immediately relax you, and dancers grab your attention. The new bar is described on their website as "future planetary nightlife" and supports organic menus and promoting cultural experiences. Their signature kava root drinks are said to "relax the body" and "heighten the mind," while other exotic drinks are offered also. This is definitely a place I am going to explore again!

All Eyes on Africa

It's hard to say if the World Cup in South Africa is having an influence on fashion, but designers are definitely looking to Africa for inspiration.
